New Balance's Tokyo Design Studio has a history of experimenting with icons from the archives, and the latest to come out of it — a rework of the much-loved 574 — is no different. The palette remains conventional, with neutral hues and burgundy across the mixed-material uppers, but the rest is far from it. The tongue and sidewall branding are removed, for starters, then the sole is replaced with a Vibram® version that’s rippled, chunkier and welted.
