The New Look Coat Edit: What to Buy for Autumn
Coat shopping goes wrong when you buy for the wrong weather. This edit groups what is in stock by shape rather than by colour, because shape decides whether a coat works in October rain or January cold, and those are two different coats.
The buyer's brief
How to choose
Three things settle it: how long, how warm, and whether it closes properly over what you wear underneath.
Length
Above the knee moves better and suits shorter frames. Below the knee is warmer and needs a heel or a boot to balance it. Try the length against what you wear most, not against the model shot.
Warmth
Wool blends hold heat and shape. Padded coats hold more heat and no shape. A trench holds neither, which is why it belongs to autumn rather than to winter.
Closure
A coat that only looks right open is a coat you cannot use in February. Check the top button or the funnel neck closes without pulling at the shoulder.
Layering room
Try the shoulder seam. If it already sits off the shoulder in your usual size, a thick knit underneath will make the sleeve bind at the arm.
Care
Wool blends need dry cleaning, padded coats usually do not. Over three winters that difference costs more than the gap between two coats at this price.
Colour
A coat gets worn more days than anything else you own, so a colour you tire of is an expensive mistake. Camel and black go furthest. A strong colour is a second coat, not a first one.
Good to know
Answered
Padded and puffer styles, especially longline ones with a hood. Wool holds heat well but loses to down and synthetic fill once the wind picks up.
