New Look Boots: The Pairs Worth Buying This Season
Boots are the one autumn purchase where the wrong choice is obvious by November. This edit groups what is in stock by type, with the fit details that decide whether a pair gets worn or gets returned.

Ankle boots
The pair that does the most work. They go under jeans, over tights, and do not need the calf fit that taller boots do. Look at where the shaft ends: a boot that stops at the narrowest part of the ankle lengthens the leg, one that sits higher does the opposite.
Chelsea boots
Elastic sides, no laces, and the fastest thing to put on. The trade off is that they loosen with wear, so a pair that feels slightly snug on day one is usually the right one. Check the pull tab is stitched rather than glued.
Knee high and tall boots
The group where fit fails most often. Calf width varies far more between styles than shoe size does, and the retailer page is where that measurement lives. Worth checking before you fall for a pair.
Heeled boots
Block heels walk further than they look, stilettos do not. For a full day on hard floors, anything above a low block heel needs a taxi plan. The heel placement matters as much as the height: set under the heel of your foot rather than behind it.
The buyer's brief
How to choose
Height and heel decide where you can wear them. Calf width decides whether you can wear them at all.
Calf fit
Measure the widest part of your calf and check it against the shaft measurement on the retailer page. This is the single most common reason tall boots go back, and shoe size tells you nothing about it.
Heel height for the day
A block heel under two inches will carry a full day. Above that, you are buying for occasions. Be honest about which one you are shopping for.
Sole and grip
UK autumn means wet pavements. A flat leather sole is beautiful and useless in November. Look for a tread on anything you plan to walk in.
Break in
Chelsea boots loosen, zipped boots barely move. If a zipped pair pinches in the shop, it will pinch in March.
Care
Suede needs a protector spray before the first wear, not after the first stain. It takes five minutes and doubles the life of the pair.

Answered
Check the calf measurement on the retailer product page against your own widest point. Shoe size does not predict it, and it varies more between styles than between sizes.
