New Look Men's Coats and Jackets Worth Knowing
The men's outerwear range splits into three jobs: keeping warm, layering, and looking smart. This edit takes the pieces in stock and sorts them that way, with notes on where each one actually earns its place.

The buyer's brief
How to choose
Decide the job first. A coat that does two of these well usually does neither properly.
Job first
A puffer keeps you warm and looks casual. A tailored coat does the opposite. Trying to buy one coat for both ends up with a coat you wear in neither situation.
Shoulder fit
The shoulder seam should sit on the edge of your shoulder, not below it. Everything else can be adjusted or lived with. That one cannot.
Layering
Try it over what you actually wear. A coat sized to a t shirt will bind across the back once a jumper goes underneath.
Hood or no hood
A hood is genuinely useful in UK rain and genuinely wrong over tailoring. If you only buy one, buy the hood and accept the compromise.
Colour
Navy, black and olive cover almost everything and hide city grime. A lighter coat looks better for the first month and worse for every month after.
Good to know
Answered
It sits between a shirt and a jacket. Heavy enough to wear outside in mild weather, light enough to keep on indoors. It is the layer most people are missing.
